Personal Statement

I’m an epidemiologist with prior training in the environmental and occupational medicine, environmental health sciences, and epidemiology. My scientific expertise contains translational environmental health research, the implementation of cost-efficient epidemiologic design with nationwide birth/child cohort data analyses.

My current research topics focused on focusing on the health effects of the environment. I’m also interested in genetic determinants of health, in particular the joint effects of genetic and environmental factors, i.e. evaluating whether genetic determinants or genetic polymorphisms interact with environmental exposures to modify disease risk (gene-environment interaction). From outcome-oriented approach, my research field covers: respiratory epidemiology; reproductive epidemiology; neurological epidemiology. From the determinant-orientated approach my research area can be divided into two major fields: ambient air pollution and birth outcomes, childhood asthma, autism and brain diseases; Indoor environment and children health. I elucidate whether and how exposures to environmental factors contribute to the lung function, respiratory diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis), bronchitic symptoms, pediatric rheumatic diseases, chronic kidney diseases, birth outcomes (oral cleft defects, cardiac defects, limb defects and stillbirth) and brain diseases (Alzheimers disease and Autism) by studying a variety of unique populations, including school children, nationwide registration data, and other large population-based cohorts.I am interested to improve the environmental health risk assessment with advanced statistical models and development of large collaborative studies. My methodological work focuses on the development of study designs and statistical methods, applied in particular to exposure assessment, time series methods, quasi-experimental studies, and cohort studies. My current research focuses on development of novel study designs for individual and small-area analyses, use of novel remote sensing and mobile technologies in epidemiology, spatiotemporal modelling of environmental exposures and risks, and projections for health impact of climate change. I am enthusiastic about open science, big data analysis, and collaboration.

Contributions to Science

Over the last 10 years, scholarly work conducted by our team, including several led by my trainees, has led to important discoveries that greatly advanced the population environmental and occupational health. These include reporting the first epidemiologic evidences for air pollution and the risk of oral cleft (PMID: 18941587), stillbirth (PMID: 21447454), limb defects (PMID: 24834822), pediatric rheumatic diseases (PMID 32120057), chronic kidney disease (PMID: 32482472), rheumatoid arthritis (PMID: 29028676) and Alzheimer's disease (PMID: 25310992), making the first effort to tackle neurotoxic mixture with correlated air pollution exposure contexts for their impact on autism risk (PMID: 24086549), identifying home dampness problems as the novel environmental determinant with asthma (PMID: 21767318; PMID: 15743728), allergic rhinitis (PMID: 20639287), documenting the presence of gene-environment interaction on the development of asthma (PMID: 24117884; PMID: 23357926), allergic rhinitis (PMID: 29028686) and bronchitic symptoms (PMID: 29456163), establishing the relationship between PM(2.5) components and asthma (PMID: 28922715). Specific to better understanding the mechanisms of indoor or outdoor air pollution toxicity on birth outcomes, respiratory diseases, chronic kidney diseases, and brain diseases. He also led the AirPollHealth Network (PIs: W.T. Chen, C.R. Jung, C.C. Kuo, Y.T. Lin, and RY Lee), a multi-school initiative at College of Public Health, China Medical University, Taiwan to develop the interdisciplinary research, education, and training program in the environmental health. Several junior faculties and trainees successfully compete for MOST and NHRI funding to develop our research through the help of the AirPollHealth network.

My research field includes epidemiological studies focusing on the health effects of the environment. I am also interested in genetic determinants of health, in particular the joint effects of genetic and environmental factors, i.e. evaluating whether genetic determinants or genetic polymorphisms interact with environmental exposures to modify disease risk (gene-environment interaction). From outcome-oriented approach my research field covers:

  • Respiratory epidemiology
  • Reproductive epidemiology
  • Neuroepidemiology

From the determinant-orientated approach my research area can be divided into three major fields:

  • Water disinfection by-products (DBPs) and reproductive outcomes
  • Ambient air pollution and health
  •  Indoor environment and health
